Composite Filling

Composite resin consists of a plastic mixture containing silicon dioxide particles. Because this material has the same color as the tooth, it is called a white filling and its presence is difficult to distinguish.

It consists of a plastic mixture containing silicon dioxide particles in composite resins. It was previously used only on anterior teeth. However, with the development of the material today, it can be successfully applied in posterior teeth as a filling material that is resistant to chewing pressures and wears less. Composite fillings, ideal for small cavities, are durable.

Composite Filling

Since composite fillings cannot withstand large areas, the use of composite fillings is not very suitable if there are large gaps in the teeth. They are ideal for small gaps (they are vulnerable to extreme forces). Composite fillings are durable if they are not subjected to excessive force.
Before the composite filling is made, the tooth surface is thoroughly cleaned, beveling is done to increase the bonded surface of the filling, cotton pads are placed around the tooth or wrapped with a rubber dam to isolate it, bonding is performed to ensure the bonding between the tooth and the composite filling. The bonding is lightened and hardened, then light-cured by placing thin layers of composite filling. This process is repeated until the caries cavity is filled.
When composite fillings were first used (in the 60s), they were used only in the anterior teeth, and with the developments, they have also started to be used in the posterior teeth as they are resistant to chewing pressures and have less wearing properties.
The biggest advantage of the composite filling is that it is aesthetic, the color of the tooth, and the polishing process can be done immediately after the filling is made. They look natural and aesthetic, do not cause any allergic reaction, and are compatible with oral tissues.
Composite fillings were often used in anterior teeth to serve aesthetics, now they can be used in every part of the mouth, namely molars.
Teeth may be sensitive to heat and cold after a while, may cause pain during chewing, filled teeth are injured teeth and need time to heal. All these discomforts will pass within 1-2 months.
Composite resins are materials that have superior mechanical properties compared to acrylic and silicate materials, have lower thermal expansion coefficients, undergo less dimensional changes during application, are resistant to abrasion, and have improved clinical performance.
It varies according to the selected material, application sensitivity, oral hygiene and nutritional habits of the patient, it can usually stay in the mouth for 10-15 years, sometimes more.
