Extraoral Appliances

Extraoral appliances are orthodontic appliances used in the treatment of jaw abnormalities and disorders. Extraoral appliances direct the development of teeth and jaw by taking support from the head, neck or forehead.

The use of orthodontic extraoral appliances is used at the age of 12-16 years, when growth is rapid, in order to give the patient a healthy appearance. Extraoral devices, chin apparatus and orthodontic face masks, which give more effective results at these ages, also increase the success of orthodontists' braces applications. Caring about the treatment and using it within the doctor's recommendation is a necessity for successful treatments.

Extraoral Appliances

  • People with abnormalities of the lower and upper dental arches
  • People with unbalanced face and jaw structure
  • Those with impaired chewing and speech functions
  • For those with tooth loss and fracture
  • Those with crooked, misplaced teeth
  • People with general orthodontic problems
In the treatment process, first of all, it is decided which appliance will be used together with the doctor's examination. Your doctor will present you with options after determining the extra-oral appliance to be used according to the mouth and jaw structure. For example, while applying the face mask, force is applied to the upper jaw by taking support from the forehead and chin. In the preparation phase, a fixed appliance is usually made inside the mouth and attached to the teeth.
Extra-oral appliances prevent jaw and tooth problems that will occur in later ages. The jaw and mouth structure of the person is made the way it should be, with the jaw apparatus, lower jaw recession apparatus and orthodontic face mask, which are used in the treatment of jaw disorders that are noticed at an early time. Extra-oral appliances, which are used by those who do not want to have jaw and mouth problems in advanced ages, without interrupting their doctor's controls, will accelerate the attainment of healthy tooth structures.
One of the disadvantages of extraoral appliances is that they have a noticeable and striking appearance. Wearing it outside the mouth and having large appliances can affect a person's daily life. Those who use chinrest and orthodontic face masks may encounter difficulties in their social lives due to movement restriction and being unprotected against impacts.
The duration of use for non-oral appliances will vary according to the treatment plan of our physician. Depending on the appliance used, the duration of treatment may vary. The course of treatment is determined by the person's jaw and tooth structure. Extraoral appliances should generally be used for 15 – 17 hours a day.
It may be difficult for you to eat with a chinrest, chin attachment or orthodontic face mask, which are non-oral appliances. But over time you will get used to it. Since it will be dangerous to bite solid food, you should cut the food and consume it in pieces. You should stay away from sticky and acidic foods to prevent damage to your braces.
To ensure the hygiene of the extra-oral appliances, you can wipe the appliance with damp cloths when you are not using it. You should also clean the parts inserted into the mouth as recommended by your doctor. Depending on the appliance used, the cleaning method may vary.
