Recontouring Applications

Recontouring, which is among the aesthetic dental treatment methods, provides reshaping of the teeth. The general procedure of the application includes the correction of the existing size, shape or contours on the surfaces of the teeth. These corrections are made by performing minor abrasions on the enamel surface.

In the recontouring application, no material is applied to the tooth. The process is just etching. Therefore, recontouring is not a dental treatment method that requires local anesthesia. The application is preferred for reasons such as fast results and low cost. The use of the application together with gingival aesthetics, teeth whitening and laminate arrangements in order to contribute to the smile design reinforces the desired result. Recontouring Applications

The purpose of the recontouring application is to correct the appearance of the teeth that people have, to achieve a more aesthetic appearance and smile.
Recontouring is applied in small fractures on the teeth, in making the pits and fissures on the enamel surface soft, and in the regularization of asymmetrical tooth structures. Recontouring is also applied to adjust the sharpness and length of canine teeth. However, this application does not replace bonding and laminate applications, which is one of the other aesthetic treatment methods.
If the recontouring application is not sufficient to eliminate the irregularities in the teeth, it is aimed to get a better result by including the bonding application in the treatment. Bonding is the process of repairing decayed, broken, worn or discolored teeth with composite resin material of the same color as the tooth.
Recontouring application will be made as a result of detailed examination by dentists. Dentists evaluate how close the nerve tissues of the teeth are to the surface in the radiographs taken during these examinations. After it is determined that the nerve tissues are at a suitable distance from the tooth surface, recontouring is decided.
Since recontouring is a superficial procedure, anesthesia is usually not applied. The reason for this is that the pulp, which is the living part of the tooth, will not be affected during the procedure. Recontouring process is applied with the help of burs that are thin and have little abrasion feature. After the process is completed, the teeth are polished and the application is completed.
Recontouring, which is applied for the main purpose of reshaping the teeth, is performed only in cases where the entire tooth structure is intact. In other words, reconturing is only preferred for superficial problems in teeth. If the enamel layer is thin or the pulp is too close to the tooth surface, recontouring may not be performed. This decision is made by the treating dentist.
  • After the recontoring application, which consists of polishing the teeth by gaining their new shape, patients do not need to do any special care. Brushing and flossing regularly is sufficient.
  • Extra care is required if the recontouring application, in which a foreign material is not placed on the tooth, is performed together with the bonding application. It is recommended to give more importance than necessary to the cleaning of the teeth in order to prevent the color change of the composite resin, which is one of the bonding materials.
  • In order to protect dental health and to detect emerging problems as soon as possible, a routine visit to the dentist should be made every 6 months. It is important for dental health that people who have had a recontouring application also comply with this rule.
